Max Kilman Deserves His Flowers After Another Strong West Ham Performance

Max Kilman continues to show why he remains such an important figure in the West Ham United defence, and his latest performance against Derby County deserves plenty of recognition.

West Ham produced a commanding 3–0 victory over Derby at the London Stadium, recording another clean sheet in the process. Kilman started at centre-back and played a major role in ensuring that Derby struggled to create clear opportunities. The official Derby match report specifically highlighted one of his most important moments, when he made a well-timed challenge to stop Oscar Fraulo from going one-on-one with the goalkeeper.

That moment perfectly captured what Kilman brings to the team.

He is not always the player grabbing the headlines or celebrating goals, but his importance becomes obvious when West Ham need someone to read danger, position himself correctly and make the decisive intervention.

Against Derby, West Ham’s defence remained composed for long periods. Derby increased their possession after the break, but the Hammers continued to protect their lead effectively. The visitors failed to register a shot on target, underlining just how successful West Ham’s defensive performance was.

For Kilman, this was another opportunity to demonstrate his reliability.

The 29-year-old defender has already been a regular starter for West Ham this season. His consistency has been particularly important during a period in which the club are attempting to rebuild their confidence following relegation to the Championship. His match record shows that he has been involved heavily in West Ham’s opening fixtures of the campaign.

And there is something encouraging about the direction of his performances.

West Ham’s 3–0 victory over Derby was their second consecutive Championship win, following the 4–2 victory over Wolves earlier in the week. More importantly, the Derby match demonstrated a different side of the team: defensive control.

After conceding four against Wolves, keeping Derby out for 90 minutes was a significant step forward.

Kilman deserves credit for being part of that improvement.

For a defender, a clean sheet can sometimes be more satisfying than an individual goal because it reflects concentration, communication, positioning and discipline across the entire back line. Kilman contributed to all of those areas.

The challenge on Fraulo was particularly important. Had Kilman failed to time his intervention correctly, Derby could have created a major opportunity at a crucial stage of the match. Instead, his anticipation prevented the danger before it developed.

This is exactly why West Ham supporters should continue backing him.

There will inevitably be difficult matches during the season, and there will be moments when individual mistakes are made. But players should also be recognised when they respond positively and deliver strong performances.

Kilman is showing that he can be a dependable presence at the heart of West Ham’s defence.

The Hammers now have momentum after back-to-back victories, and the challenge is to maintain that standard. If Kilman can continue producing performances like the one against Derby, West Ham will have a much stronger foundation from which to build their promotion campaign.

No unnecessary hype. No exaggeration. Just a simple fact: Max Kilman did his job, helped West Ham keep a clean sheet, and deserves his credit.
