The Newcastle United captain insists they must shelve Sunday’s Sunderland disappointment ahead of a huge cup clash

Bruno Guimaraes says Newcastle United’s players ‘cannot stand’ their current position in the Premier League, insisting they must channel their anger from Sunday’s derby defeat to Sunderland to achieve their goals this season.

Newcastle fell to a 1-0 defeat to their fierce rivals at the Stadium of Light as Nick Woltemade’s unfortunate own goal ultimately proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Eddie Howe’s side have come in for some criticism for the way they approached the game as Sunderland claimed the region’s bragging rights until the two sides meet again at St James’ Park in March.

It will take a long time for United fans to get over the defeat but the club’s players have to move on quickly with a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Fulham at St James’ Park on Wednesday evening.

Guimaraes slammed Newcastle’s performance as ’embarrassing’ and a ‘mess’ but he has now urged his team-mates to use their frustration as a ‘power’ to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals, the Champions League knockout rounds, as well as reigniting their Premier League campaign.

“Now we have just, for me, one way to go,” Guimaraes told Chronicle Live.

“That is beating everyone, improve our form, qualify the club for the semi-final of the Carabao Cup, qualify for the Champions League and improve our level in the Premier League as well.

“We have to put the club in the semi-final again. It’s a clear message. We have to show that today we have to use this as a power to improve our season, improve our level.

“We cannot stand the way we are now. We have to put the anger on the pitch and definitely 100 per cent qualify the club for another Carabao Cup semi-final.”
