Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali was spotted in ‘deep conversation’ with Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola following their game on Wednesday night, with journalist Mike McGrath confirming that the Citizens are interested in him.
Tonali’s future was a topic of discussion late in the January transfer window, with the Italian international linked with a move to fellow Premier League side Arsenal. Nothing came of it, with Tonali remaining at St James’ Park, but it was certainly interesting to see his name circulated.

According to journalist McGrath, Tonali was spotted in ‘deep conversation’ with Guardiola after their Carabao Cup clash on Wednesday night. The journalist also confirms that Tonali is a player of interest to Manchester City as they look at potential long-term midfield options.
What happens with Tonali in the future remains to be seen, but persistent links to other clubs won’t be welcomed by Newcastle. The Magpies hold all the cards in the situation, with Tonali having a contract that runs until 2029, with the option of an additional year, so it certainly won’t be easy for clubs like Man City to prise him away from St James’ Park in the near future.
Newcastle Can’t be Selling Tonali
If Newcastle want to progress, they can’t continue selling their best players. The Magpies allowed Alexander Isak to head through the exit door in the summer transfer window, with Liverpool offering a monster fee to secure his services, but Newcastle need to be careful not to lose too many stars.
Eddie Howe’s side are already struggling at the moment, sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League, and losing a player of Tonali’s ability is only going to make that more difficult.
