Kevin Nolan captained Newcastle United for two seasons and has given his say on current events at St James’ Park.
Kevin Nolan has called on Newcastle United to avoid an Alexander Isak situation by selling Bruno Guimaraes.
And in a passionate defence of Eddie Howe, the former Toon captain has urged supporters to back the long-serving manager. Guimaraes is yet to return to pre-season training following the World Cup amid interest from Arsenal.
It is understood that the Brazilian wants to leave, although Emirates chiefs are yet to make a formal offer. Newcastle value Guimaraes – who turns 29 in November – at around £85million.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Nolan admitted losing Guimaraes would be a blow but urged the Magpies to act quickly. He said: “Massive blow to Newcastle. Massive blow to Newcastle. I can’t believe it’s only £75million because I really rate this lad. You’ve seen last season when he was out of the Newcastle team, how they struggled.
“He’s the captain, the one who has driven them, who’s taken them sometimes on his back and made things happen. So it’ll be a massive, massive signing for Michael Atata and Arsenal. If Guimaraes is going to go, I hope it’s not like the Isak saga. Just get it done, get him out and get someone moved in.”

Nolan also tipped Howe to steer Newcastle through choppy waters and into a new era. The Magpies have lost several high-profile stars, replacing the likes of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali with young talent.
“Now they’re (Newcastle) going to recruit youngsters, the best around Europe and then hope that they can build something with Eddie,” Nolan added. “He’s shown and he’s proven that he can coach and make players much better to be at the top level and highest in the game. But it’s going to take time, patience.
“I think a lot of it has to do with social media (the Howe criticism last season). When I speak to a lot of the fans up in Newcastle, I don’t think that’s where they’re at. I think they all respect what Eddie’s done.
“You’ve got to give Eddie time now. If this is the way you’re going, he’s obviously bought into the plan and you’ve got to give him the time to now go and execute it. Look, they’re the best fans up there. They will all be behind Eddie. I just hope he gets off to a good start. There’s nothing better than seeing them doing well.”
