The Brazilian joined Arsenal from Sunderland’s fierce local rivals Newcastle United last month in a deal worth £75 million.

He scored his first goal for Arsenal against Sunderland: a magnificent 25-yard strike, just two minutes after David Raya had saved Enzo Le Fee’s penalty after the hosts were awarded a spot-kick – much to the frustration of Mikel Arteta, who was fuming after the match despite securing another three points.

Bruno celebrated with a hand gesture before cupping his ears to the Sunderland fans, who’d given the former Newcastle captain stick from the moment he arrived at the stadium.

Arsenal wrapped up all three points in stoppage-time as Bukayo Saka scored from the spot, but Bruno then took the chance to rub further salt into Sunderland wounds via social media.

He reposted a photo of his celebration to his Instagram story alongside the words: “Once a Geordie, always a Geordie.”

He then explained the meaning of his celebration, revealing the hand gesture meant “They know what they are”, adding: “The fat rat wishes you a nice weekend.”

Arsenal’s hard-fought win in the north-east further cements their status as the team to beat in the Premier League this season.

The Gunners, who beat Manchester City to win the Community Shield last month, have won all of their opening four league fixtures, scoring eight goals and conceding just one.

“It’s a huge win, a huge week as well,” Arteta said after Arsenal’s latest victory. “Winning against Chelsea, winning in Napoli [in the Champions League] and now here – a really tough place to come, what a beautiful atmosphere and a really well-organised, really well-gelled team, that makes life really difficult for you.”

Sunderland will take plenty of heart from their performance against the champions but know they spurned a huge opportunity to spring a major surprise.

Le Fee had the chance to put the Black Cats ahead in the 56th minute but his spot-kick was expertly saved by Raya, one of the world’s best goalkeepers right now.

Sunderland subsequently sit 14th in the table following their second defeat of the campaign, having secured four points from their opening fixtures.
