Alan Shearer fires Matthias Jaissle warning at Newcastle United

Newcastle United are aiming to end a run of back-to-back Premier League games when they take on Crystal Palace this weekend.

Alan Shearer is concerned by Newcastle United’s lack of creativity while insisting Matthias Jaissle must deliver a result at Crystal Palace.

Consecutive defeats to Coventry City and Aston Villa have burst the balloon of positivity on Tyneside. Boos echoed around St James’ Park last weekend when Unai Emery’s men edged out the Magpies on home soil.

Newcastle travel to Palace on Sunday – a side they have not beaten on the road since November 2020. On a positive note, the Eagles have conceded the most Premier League goals this season, travelled to Besiktas on Thursday and lost 5-0 to bitter rivals Brighton last time out.

‘A big game’ – Alan Shearer

Speaking to Betfair, Toon icon Shearer highlighted Palace’s struggles – and stressed that Newcastle “need” a positive result. He said: “Newcastle need to turn their form around quickly, especially with no European football. I will say this so many times this season, about many managers and clubs… Sunday’s a big game for Matthias Jaissle and Newcastle.

“They’re away to Crystal Palace, who were playing in Turkey on Thursday evening and have been awful. Palace got battered last weekend at Brighton. So Newcastle need a result at Palace.”

Shearer also aired concerns about Newcastle’s scarcity of match-winners in a grim warning to Jaissle. He added: “At Newcastle, I’m troubled by the lack of creativity, the lack of a player who’s going to get 15 goals, who’s going to open the defence up, who’s going to put a brilliant cross in, who’s going to play that killer pass.

“I didn’t see any of that at the weekend and that’s been a concern all season, the lack of chances we actually create. It was certainly evident on Saturday. Something has to change in their performance. They’ve had a week to prepare, so I would imagine they’re working extremely hard to rectify those issues.”
