The Cleveland Browns have officially agreed to terms with a contract for former Browns quarterback (2023) Joe Flacco. The signing is for one year and four million dollars and up to 13 million in incentives.
This is an exciting deal for sure with this morning’s announcement.
Throughout his single season with the Browns, the team went 11-6 and made it to the wild card round of the playoffs, losing to the Houston Texans, 45-14. That was a disappointing one for sure after an overall great season.
Flacco is now 40 years old and incredibly brings 17 years of experience in quite an amazing NFL career overall.
In his single year back in Cleveland, Flacco was very well-liked by the fan base due to his personality and of course the winning ways for that time.
Currently, the Browns also have a quarterback in Kenny Pickett who will likely serve as a backup. Many expect the franchise to select a quarterback this upcoming draft with either the second overall pick or possibly 33rd. Maybe even something later in the draft. What’s so good about the Flacco signing is he can serve as a mentor to said selection and potentially help the quarterback blossom with the franchise for the future.
Alternatively, some see the Browns now drafting an elite position player instead of a quarterback and simply letting Flacco compete for the starting spot against Pickett.
This upcoming year, it’s not as if the Browns are now going to become elite. While Flacco is a solid player, it remains to be seen if he has anything left in the tank. Seeing if he can still play at an elite level level of any type.
Last season as a member of the Indianapolis Colts they had an 8-9 overall record. He threw for 1,761 yards, 12 touchdowns compared to seven interceptions and a QBR of 90.5
What’s nice about this signing is the risk is very minimal. Not only is it for only a single season but a small amount of money. Browns fans are used to large contracts of massive amounts of money for the quarterback…
Well, who knows?
Maybe Flacco will find a spark in Cleveland while under center and also additionally continue to build that relationship with a potential future star quarterback who gets drafted. Maybe he will get help from an elite drafted receiver.
The only bad part of this is simply if Flacco struggles as a quarterback or sustains an injury early or throughout the season because of his age and whatnot.
