Rangers cult hero Peter Lovenkrands has hailed Dan Neil’s outstanding performance against Celtic and compared the midfielder’s influence to that of former legendary Ibrox captain Barry Ferguson.
The former Sunderland star produced a commanding display in the heart of the Gers midfield, impressing with his composure on the ball, his work out of possession and, crucially, his emphatic contribution in front of goal.
For Lovenkrands, the performance immediately evoked memories of Ferguson, who was renowned for his ability to dictate the tempo of matches and control proceedings from the middle of the park.

Rather than simply influencing the game when Rangers had possession, Neil was equally effective when his side were without the ball, showing the energy and intelligence required to dictate the midfield battle. His passing provided Rangers with control, while his movement and positioning allowed him to repeatedly find space and dictate the rhythm of the contest.
Neil also underlined his performance with a double, adding another dimension to what was already a strong individual showing. And club great Lovenkrands reserved special praise for the quality of those finishes, insisting they were far more than routine contributions.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound, he said: “Dan Neil ran the show from the start. On the ball he never lost a pass, simple things, he was doing everything right. I’ve not seen a performance like that since Barry Ferguson in the way he controlled the midfield.
“He dominated in and out of possession. He popped up with goals, not just any goals, top class finishes. It was an outstanding performance.”
The comparison with Ferguson is significant given the former Scotland international’s status at Rangers. He is still regarded as one of the club’s defining players of his generation.
For Neil to draw such praise after a single performance highlights just how influential he was over the 90 minutes. While comparisons with Ferguson naturally carry considerable weight, Lovenkrands’ assessment reflects the authority Neil displayed throughout the match.
“It was a great team performance,” admitted man of the match Neil on Premier Sports. “We fully deserved the victory. I don’t score many goals. I thought the big man [Kevin Kelsy] was excellent today.
“In the last few games we’ve done well without the ball. Today we wanted to use the crowd and get after them – the lads executed it perfectly. We all believed in the plan. The gaffer is good before games and he made sure we were ready to run through brick walls. That togetherness and cohesion has really come on recently.”
