Sunderland are making progress in their pursuit of Geny Catamo as talks continue with Sporting CP over a potential move
Sunderland are making positive progress towards an agreement with Geny Catamo, with the Sporting CP winger understood to be open to a move to the Stadium of Light during this summer’s transfer window.
The Echo understands discussions on the player side are moving in a positive direction, although there is still work to do before any potential transfer can be completed. Club-to-club talks with Sporting remain ongoing after Sunderland stepped up their interest in the 25-year-old.
Sunderland have also explored the work permit situation and the different possibilities available should an agreement with Sporting eventually be reached. That work is understood to have taken place as part of the club’s preparations for a potential deal rather than an indication that a transfer is already complete.
Sporting’s position remains a significant part of the equation. Catamo has a €60million (£51million) release clause, which was confirmed by the Portuguese club when he signed a new contract in December 2023. Portuguese reports this summer have suggested Sunderland could be prepared to go as high as €40million (£34million), although Sporting have so far taken a firm stance over the Mozambique international.
Catamo is predominantly a left-footed right winger but has also operated as a wing-back and on the opposite flank during his time in Portugal. He currently wears Sporting’s number 10 shirt and has become an established Mozambique international. There is no club-to-club agreement at this stage, but progress with Catamo himself represents another potentially important step as Sunderland continue to push for a deal.
