MASON GREENWOOD’S RETURN TO ENGLISH FOOTBALL ENDED IN A NIGHTMARE AT VILLA PARK AS THE CHANTS AIMED AT HIM BY ASTON VILLA FANS GO VIRAL

Mason Greenwood booed in first game on home turf since rape charges dropped

Mason Greenwood was roundly booed on his first playing return to England with Fenerbahce on Wednesday night.

The Turkish side’s Champions League trip to Aston Villa marked Greenwood’s first playing appearance in England since Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over West Ham United on January 22, 2022.

Eight days after that game, Greenwood was arrested and later charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Those charges were dropped in February 2023, but in August of that year it was announced that Greenwood would leave United by mutual consent following a six-month internal club investigation into his conduct and a backlash to a report suggesting United had considered reintegrating him.

Since then, Greenwood has been allowed to rebuild his playing career on loan at Getafe in Spain, Marseille in France and now Fenerbahce.

But Greenwood, who was born in Bradford, was given a reminder that he remains largely unpopular in England as Villa’s fans booed his name and aimed derogatory chants at the 25-year-old in the early stages of the game.

Before the match, TNT commentator Adam Summerton talked viewers through the familiar names in the Fenerbahce line-up, including former Manchester City players Ederson and Nathan Aké, but ex-United striker Greenwood was not name-checked.
