Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes dedicated his last-gasp clincher against Burnley to his father.
And in an emotional message to Toon fans, the midfielder vowed to “keep going no matter what” while toasting a memorable 2025. Guimaraes pounced on Martin Dubravka’s howler to bundle into an empty net and seal all three points for the Magpies at Turf Moor.
His sixth goal of the campaign put the cherry on top of a year that saw the 28-year-old lead Newcastle to domestic glory. Upon arrival at St James’ Park, Guimaraes set out to etch his name in the club’s history – he is now playing with the house’s money having done so in March.

Posting on Instagram after the Burnley win, Guimaraes issued a battle cry to Newcastle supporters ahead of 2026. The captain celebrated his goal by pretending to drive a car, a nod to his father, Dick, who worked as a taxi driver in Brazil.
“A great way to end 2025 with a big victory and another goal!” Guimaraes wrote. “What a wonderful year. Grateful for everything that’s been happening in my life. The key is to keep going no matter what. See you next year, Geordies, and enjoy your New Year. Thank God. 39 always in command!”
Eddie Howe reacts
Giving his thoughts on the three points, Eddie Howe said: “Yes, a massive win for us. I don’t think it really matters tonight so much in terms of how we did it, we just needed to do it. A really strong start from us, in recognition of how important the game was for us. I can’t praise the players enough for how we battled through it.
“It was never going to be easy tonight. That second half was a massive 45 minutes for us. We needed to get over the line and put credit to the players for how they saw the game out and the character of the group.
“In my opinion, we’re moving in the right direction in terms of level of performance. I think over time, if you continue to play well, I thought Manchester United were a case in point. I don’t think we played badly and I think we had chances to get more from the game, but we didn’t take the general performance for strong.
“I think over time you will win games with the quality of players that we have and I think that showed today. We’re not at our most confident level at the moment, I think that’s obvious, but I do think it’s a confidence issue more than anything else. And the only way to resolve that is to win games.”
Lewis Hall speaks to NewcastleWorld
In more positive news, Lewis Hall – who played all 90 minutes – told NewcastleWorld he expects the knock to be ok. The Magpies will need the young left-back at his marauding best for the clash against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
“I just rolled it in the first half,” Hall said. “When I came out I just stiffened up a little bit, but it should be fine hopefully.”
