Newcastle United latest news: Fabrizio Romano has dropped a major transfer update on one Newcastle United winger.
Newcastle United winger Antonio Cordero could return to Spain during the January transfer window, just six months after leaving his homeland to sign for the Magpies.
Newcastle beat off interest from Real Madrid and Barcelona to land Cordero’s signature back in June, with the teenager moving to Tyneside on a free transfer following the expiration of his contract at Malaga. Signing Cordero was viewed as a coup for the Magpies and one that, if all went to plan, they could nurture into a first-team player after a successful loan spell away from the club.
Belgian side KVC Westerlo was viewed as the place for Cordero to continue his development. However, his spell at the Belgian Pro League side has not been as fruitful as initially hoped.
Cordero is yet to make a single league start for Westerlo and has featured in just eight matches in total. He has been an unused substitute on seven occasions and didn’t even feature in the squad as they lost to Gent on Saturday.
Antonio Cordero linked with Spain return
Cordero’s lack of game time in Belgium may force a rethink on Tyneside about how best to aid his development. One of the possible options could be to recall him from his current loan and send him out to another club.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Spanish side Cadiz could be interested in signing the winger when the January transfer window opens and that a deal has already been agreed between the two clubs. He wrote on X: ‘EXCL: Cádiz agree loan deal to sign Antonio Cordero from Newcastle as Westerlo loan deal has been interrupted. Cádiz win race to sign talented winger, as #NUFC sources confirm.’
A move to Cadiz would see Cordero once again return to Spain’s second division – the league he starred in during his time at Malaga. Cadiz currently sit sixth in the La Liga 2 table with eyes on sealing promotion to the top-flight.
During his final season at Malaga, one that convinced the Magpies to make their move for him in the summer, Cordero scored six goals and assisted a further seven as he became a regular starter, despite beginning the season as a 17-year-old with limited first-team experience.
Upon joining Newcastle United in June, Cordero said: “It’s truly an honour to be here, truly a pleasure.
“I am a person who likes to aspire high. Why not come to one of the best places in the world to do it?
“It’s a big step, and that’s one of the reasons I’m here. I’m happy to do it and have a great desire to get going already.”
A move to Cadiz and, crucially, back to his native Spain, could be exactly what Cordero needs to help continue his development away from the glare of England and the Premier League. If he can rediscover the form that he showed at Malaga, then there is hope that he can either then return to Newcastle United and push for a spot in the squad next season, or, be ready once again to be sent out on-loan elsewhere to really step-up his development.
