Willie Collum delivers verdict on controversial Celtic VAR incidents
The Scottish FA’s Head of Refereeing Willie Collum has delivered his verdict on recent incidents in Celtic matches and the VAR process used by officials.
A decision to penalise a Sam Nicholson handball, which led to a winning Celtic penalty against Motherwell earlier this month, sparked intense media coverage and criticism amid the culmination of the tightest title race for years.
Referee John Beaton in particular was the subject of severe scrutiny in the aftermath and ultimately required Police Scotland supervision after his address and personal details were leaked online.
Earlier on Friday, the VAR audio was released of the incident which confirmed a unanimous view of officials on the pitch and at Clydesdale House that the ball struck Nicholson’s arm, which they feel was in an unnatural position above shoulder height. Per IFAB laws, that would be justification to give a penalty.

Collum addresses Celtic penalty call
Collum said of the incident in the Scottish Football VAR Review Show, “For us there is clear evidence. When you look at the image, particularly the still image where there is the head, the hand and the ball, in our opinion this is clear.
“When you strip this incident back, let’s think about the context, the 95th minute of the match. The VAR and the AVAR go through a thorough process here. For them, they are quite clear this is a handball and a punishable handball. When the referee comes to the monitor, he’s of the same opinion. For us we fully support what they’ve reached in terms of an outcome.”
The speed of the decision was then put to Collum by host Gordon Duncan. Beaton did not take long at the monitor to confirm the penalty kick.
Collum responded, “If you think about a handball situation, when you bring the referee to the monitor, you’ve already reached the conclusion that it has hit the hand. When the referee comes to the monitor his main focus is being shown at a normal speed on a loop and then to check the position of the arm which is really crucial. Then he just quickly confirms has it hit the hand, to which the VAR responds yes because the work’s already been done in the check.”
The role of Auston Trusty in the challenge was also questioned and Collum addressed subsequent criticism that the USA international may have forced Nicholson’s arm into an unnatural position.
The SFA official said, “Sam Nicholson’s hand and arm are already in an unnatural position as the ball is coming, it then moves further into an unnatural position. When a player jumps for a ball and they have their hand in this position, they take a huge risk. This is not a foul from the Celtic player.”
Alistair Johnston’s derby tackle
Another incident that has generated plenty of headlines in recent weeks was Alistair Johnston‘s tackle on Mikey Moore in Celtic’s derby win versus Rangers.

“I can see arguments for and against here. I can understand both perspectives.”

He said, “Two things are crucial for me in this incident. Josh Campbell completely ignores the ball and it’s a two-handed push. This is far removed from normal footballing contact. It should have been a penalty given on field and if missed on field it should have resulted in a VAR intervention. There’s a really good angle here. This should have been a penalty kick.”
