Newcastle United are on tenterhooks as they await Bruno Guimaraes’ return to the squad following his World Cup campaign with Brazil.

The Magpies skipper will get extra time off this summer after playing a key role for his country in the tournament, although Brazil’s bid for glory ended with a last-16 defeat to Norway.

Attention will turn to Bruno when he returns to Tyneside, with supporters eager to learn more about his future amid continued transfer speculation.

The 28-year-old has been heavily linked with Arsenal, with some reports claiming he is interested in exploring his options.

However, there has been no bid or formal enquiry from the Gunners. There is also no indication that Bruno intends to force a move, although Newcastle are expected to clarify his intentions when he returns.

Bruno has remained silent publicly since posting an emotional message after Brazil’s World Cup exit, a match in which he missed a penalty. However, he has been active on social media.

Supporters noticed that Bruno liked a recent Instagram post from teammate Sven Botman. The Dutch defender shared photos from Newcastle’s first week of pre-season with the caption:

> “New start, let’s go together.”

Bruno’s like quickly caught the attention of fans looking for any indication about his future.

While it is far from a definitive statement, many supporters have viewed it as a positive sign regarding his commitment to Newcastle.

Newcastle’s World Cup players are expected to receive an additional three weeks of holiday. Bruno is scheduled to return in the final week of July, in time for the club’s pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain.

Anthony Elanga returned to training on Friday, while Nick Woltemade was pictured training with former club Werder Bremen ahead of the new season.
