But it was Shearer’s  response that really sent social media into overdrive.

The Newcastle legend was sitting alongside Phillips in the Sky Sports studio before calmly responding: “It’s very easy to sit there and throw stones when you’re not the one wearing the shirt. Newcastle were poor tonight, absolutely. Nobody is hiding from that. But don’t confuse criticism with disrespect.”

Shearer then turned his attention to the players’ reaction to the defeat.

“They’ll know they weren’t good enough,” Shearer continued. “They don’t need somebody telling them they’re a disgrace or questioning whether they deserve to play for Newcastle. What they need is accountability, a reaction and a performance that shows what this club is about.”
