Roy Keane Slams West Ham Star After Nightmare Performance Against Bolton

West Ham United may have walked away from Tuesday night’s Championship clash with all three points, but the 3–2 victory over Bolton Wanderers was far from comfortable. While Jarrod Bowen emerged as the match-winner with two goals, one West Ham player endured a night he will want to forget.

Kyle Walker-Peters was arguably the Hammers’ biggest weakness at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, with his performance coming under serious scrutiny after a difficult opening 45 minutes. One player-rating assessment gave him just 3/10, the lowest rating among West Ham’s starters.

The right-back struggled almost from the opening stages. Bolton repeatedly looked to attack down his side, putting West Ham under pressure and exposing gaps that allowed the hosts to build momentum. What should have been a controlled away performance quickly became a frantic contest, with Nuno Espírito Santo’s side repeatedly having to respond to Bolton’s attacks.

The problems became even more costly when Bolton equalised and then moved in front. Walker-Peters was heavily involved in the build-up to Bolton’s second goal, with his challenge on Kyliane Dong resulting in a penalty that Ruben Rodrigues converted. That gave Bolton a 2–1 advantage and left West Ham facing the prospect of dropping points against a newly promoted side.

For a player of Walker-Peters’ experience, it was a particularly difficult spell. His positioning was questioned, his involvement in possession was not convincing enough and Bolton appeared to recognise that West Ham were vulnerable whenever they attacked his side of the pitch.

West Ham eventually recovered before half-time, with Konstantinos Mavropanos heading home from an Arne Engels free-kick to make it 2–2. But even after the equaliser, the Hammers still looked vulnerable defensively.

The second half brought some improvement from Walker-Peters, who tried to make amends for his earlier struggles. He combined with Bowen during one promising attack and delivered a dangerous cross into the box. However, his night was brought to an early end when he was substituted after 56 minutes.

That decision highlighted just how difficult his evening had been.

Thankfully for West Ham, Bowen stepped up when his team needed him most. The England international produced the decisive moment in the 77th minute, finding the net for his second goal of the night to give West Ham a 3–2 victory. The result moved the Hammers to the top of the Championship at the time and extended their winning run.

However, the victory should not completely hide the defensive concerns exposed by Bolton.

West Ham conceded twice in a chaotic first half and allowed a newly promoted side to create significant problems. The performance showed that, despite their attacking quality, there are still areas Nuno Espírito Santo will need to address if his side are serious about challenging for promotion.

For Walker-Peters personally, the match was a major setback. His performance was in stark contrast to Bowen, who delivered when it mattered, and the defender will now have to respond quickly when his next opportunity arrives.

West Ham ultimately got what they wanted: three points, three consecutive Championship victories and a place at the top of the table. But behind the positive result was a performance that exposed weaknesses—and Walker-Peters was at the centre of them.

The biggest question now is whether this was simply a one-off nightmare or a warning sign that West Ham’s defensive problems could become a bigger issue as the season progresses.
