Unfortunately, Eddie Howe‘s malaise has deepened at Newcastle United, and it’s beginning to look like the title-winning manager is heading for the exit this summer.

Another Premier League defeat. Another example of United’s regression since lifting the Carabao Cup last season and securing a ticket into the Champions League. Bournemouth were well worth their three points, but that’s eight defeats from 11 Premier League games for Howe now, and his superiors are going to consider his position upon review.

It’s clear that Newcastle’s season is over. The Magpies are, thankfully, in no risk of being relegated, but there’s little question about a late-season push for Europe for the 14th-place side, who would need to string together a confident winning run to overturn this deficit.

It feels awful to suggest that Howe should go, but things are not going well, and it’s a sentiment likely shared by much of the Tyneside fanbase.

Newcastle already lining up Howe replacement

If PIF do decide to bite the bullet and sack Howe this summer, they will the pick of a number of options. At the very least, the managerial market is well packed.

Among the leading contenders is outgoing Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, who has impressed over the past three seasons on the south coast. The Spaniard is a wanted man, though whether he would prove an upgrade on Howe, who has returned silverware to St. James’ Park, is another question.

Benfica boss Jose Mourinho is also on the radar, but some would say that the Portuguese legend’s coaching career is at the wrong end, with his pragmatic tactics not quite what the fans would hope to see.

However, Newcastle could strike gold by appointing Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner, whose contract at Selhurst Park expires this summer, with Football Insider confirming that he has been added to PIF’s shortlist.

Glasner will have no shortage of suitors when he drapes the curtain on his title-winning Palace tenure, but a clear favourite has not yet emerged, leaving the door open for the Magpies to swoop.

Why Glasner could be the perfect Howe replacement

Glasner, 53, has proven himself and then some as a quality Premier League manager, shaping Crystal Palace into a stylish and coherent outfit, winning the FA Cup and the Community Shield in 2025.

Hailed as a “genius” by former Palace man John Salako, Glasner’s relentless hunger for success has taken his Premier League to new heights. Newcastle could do with that, and given that he previously won the Europa League with Eintracht Frankfurt, it’s clear that this is not a glash in the pan but a wider quality tailored toward an elite sphere.

Howe has shown himself to boast similar qualities, but his project has gone stale, and a freshen-up might be the best thing for every party.

His adaptability, shifting between a three-man defence and a more typical backline, could work well within this dynamic United squad, and his excellent track record in the market is something that the club need too after last year’s window left much to be desired.

Howe has earned a lot of praise for changing the mentality at Newcastle. Namely, he has instilled a winning mentality, with his emphasis on challenging in cup competitions paying dividends last year.

In that, Glasner shares his footballing worldview, and while the same can certainly be said for Mourinho, the aforementioned has a more modern tactical mind that would aid the progression of the Magpies project.

Iraola, meanwhile, would hardly be a bad appointment, but he’s yet to prove himself at the highest level or indeed in Europe. Glasner is currently hunting down the Conference League title.

Howe has immortalised himself at Newcastle. He will forever be remembered as a leading figure at the start of something special for the Toon.

However, it’s time for a change, and Glasner could be the perfect manager to take the wheel.
