Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon scored as Newcastle United beat Burnley 2-1 at St James’ Park.
Newcastle United moved into the top half of the Premier League table with a 2-1 victory over Burnley.
After scoring against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night , Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon were again on the scoresheet to give Newcastle a 2-0 lead at half-time. Zian Flemming pulled one back for the Clarets in second-half stoppage time.
Eddie Howe made six changes from Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, with Jacob Ramsey handed only his second Premier League start since joining from Aston Villa for £39million in the summer.
Ramsey formed part of a fully rotated midfield three as he, Bruno Guimaraes and Joe Willock came in for Sandro Tonali, Lewis Miley and Joelinton, while the other changes saw Fabian Schar, Anthony Gordon and Anthony Elanga replace Lewis Hall, Jacob Murphy and Harvey Barnes.
Yoane Wissa was named in the matchday squad for the first time since his £55million move from Brentford on September 1.
Newcastle broke the deadlock on the hour mark when Guimaraes’ in-swinging corner looped over Martin Dubravka and into the far corner. It was the Brazilian’s fifth goal of the season, but his first at the Leazes End.
Things from bad to worse for Burnley as 12 minutes later as Lucas Pires was sent off for bringing down Elanga, who was in on goal.
On the brink of half-time, United doubled their lead. Gordon scored from the penalty spot for the second consecutive game after Lesley Ugochukwu was penalised for a handball.
Another penalty was awarded in second-half stoppage time, this time to Burnley. Ramsey handled the ball and Flemming converted.
