Garvey, after all, has known the Wales international since he was a boy, since Wilson was a hugely talented and ultra-sporty pupil at Ysgol Dinas Bran, a bilingual school in the small Denbighshire town of Llangollen.

Indeed, Garvey knows both the football player and the person behind the impressive Premier League season that made the winger one of the most sought-after free agents on the market this summer. Leeds have won the race to sign the 29-year-old, and Wilson’s former Head of PE is confident they’ll be happy about it.

“The school motto is ‘Success Through Effort’ and in every respect of his school life he worked to that model very much,” Garvey tells LeedsLive.

“That’s very much been so in his career too, when he was at Derby, when he’s been at Fulham, all the clubs he’s been at and hopefully also when he goes on and does a great job for Leeds.

“Anything that he’s put his mind to, he’s always put 100% effort into it and that’s why he’s been so successful.”

Wilson first entered Garvey’s orbit when he joined Dinas Bran out of primary school, he worked with him until Year 11 when, having been in the Liverpool academy since the age of eight, Wilson then signed a full time contract with the Reds.

He didn’t need to be much of a talent-spotter to recognise the school had someone special in their ranks.

“He stood out a mile straight away, as soon as you saw him play, his first touch, his reading of the game, his decision-making, everything just looked like in slow motion the way he was playing. You could see everything happen in front of him.

“We’ve had some really good players in the past at the school, not in Harry’s year, but we’ve made it to Welsh Cup finals. We’ve done well, but when you see a Harry come along it stands out.

“What Harry was amazing at was the ball would stay in a straight line, but the way you see him play now, he would deceive people with his feints and his body movements.
