Chris Sutton has delivered a huge early-season verdict on the Scottish Premiership title race, insisting that Celtic currently have everything required to retain their crown — and claiming Rangers still have to show they can match the Hoops over the course of an entire campaign.

Sutton’s argument is built around Celtic’s blistering start. After five league matches, Martin O’Neill’s side have collected a perfect 15 points, scoring 13 goals and conceding only three. Rangers, meanwhile, sit fourth with 10 points and a +2 goal difference.

The Hoops’ recent form certainly gives Sutton plenty to point towards. Celtic followed a 2-1 victory over Falkirk with a commanding 3-0 win against Aberdeen before defeating St Mirren 2-1 away from home.

Rangers have also responded positively, winning their last three league matches against Aberdeen, Falkirk and Motherwell. However, their 10-point haul leaves them five points behind Celtic after the opening five matches.

That was where the debate reportedly became heated, with Kris Boyd refusing to accept Sutton’s suggestion that the title race was already leaning heavily toward Celtic.

Kris Boyd response:

And the opportunity is coming quickly.

The two sides are scheduled to meet in the Premier Sports Cup on September 13 before Celtic host Rangers in the Premiership seven days later on September 20.

Those two fixtures could therefore transform the early title narrative.

For now, though, Celtic have the perfect league record, the superior goal difference and a five-point advantage.
