Mateta joined Palace in 2021 and has since gone on to score 62 goals in 203 appearances for the South London club, leading them to an FA Cup and Conference League triumph. He was on the verge of ending his love affair with the Eagles in January, but a prospective move to AC Milan fell through at the eleventh hour.

The Frenchman is subsequently back at Selhurst Park for the new season, but is arguing that he should no longer be contracted to the Eagles.

While FIFA have cast their verdict on the situation, declaring that they have no say in the matter, an overall conclusion to the saga has yet to be reached.

After netting 10 goals in 17 appearances for Mainz in the first half of the 2020/21 season, Palace opted to sign Mateta in January of that season. He joined on an initial 18-month loan deal before signing a four-and-a-half-year contract 12 months later in January 2022, when the decision was made to make the arrangement permanent.

Crucially, however, this deal included the option of a 12-month extension, which Palace activated in 2024. This means that his current contract expires in June 2027, at the end of this season.

BBC Sport report that the 29-year-old doesn’t believe that this final year of his contract is valid, and he’s taken the matter to the relevant authorities.

It turns out FIFA aren’t one of the relevant authorities, as the football organisation ruled earlier this week that overriding the contract is not within its jurisdiction.

Mateta’s case has, however, been heard by an independent tribunal under the Premier League’s rules.

There has been no official communication regarding the outcome, although it’s believed that the striker’s contract has remained binding.

A few years ago, Mateta would’ve been deemed something of a cult hero amongst Palace fans. Nowadays, after leading the line for a successful team that has won multiple pieces of silverware, he’s established legendary status at Selhurst Park.

However, his desire to leave for the San Siro in January, combined with his case to free himself from his final year in South London, means he’s close to tarnishing his Palace legacy. In fact, he could ruin it completely if he’s not careful.

The France international understandably wants to pursue other opportunities. His days at the top level are numbered, and he’ll be keen on getting a taste of Champions League football before he bows out.

That said, there is a way to go about getting this move, and many might argue that he’s not conducting himself in a way that aligns with being a club legend at Palace.
