Leeds United are virtually safe now after last week’s win over Burnley took them to 43 points, leaving them in a strong position to remain in the Premier League.
Daniel Farke has been keen to keep expectations under control until survival is mathematically confirmed, although Leeds could secure their status before Monday’s trip to Tottenham.
Even so, the game in north London could still carry huge significance. A Spurs win might be enough to secure their own safety, but if Leeds come away with a result, Tottenham could be pulled straight back into the relegation battle.
Spurs also gave themselves a major lift over the weekend, with their win at Aston Villa moving them out of the bottom three, and there is now growing belief around the club that they can avoid the drop.
Cundy and O’Hara disagree about Tottenham vs Leeds
Spurs have seven points from their last three games, and Roberto De Zerbi has managed to drag Spurs out of the relegation zone in the last couple of weeks.
Jason Cundy and Jamie O’Hara were speaking about Tottenham’s survival chances on talkSPORT on Saturday night, and O’Hara seemed far too confident about his former side staying up.
However, Cundy insisted that Tottenham can ill-afford to take Leeds lightly, given how well Daniel Farke’s side have played in recent weeks.
O’Hara insisted that Tottenham would beat Leeds. However, Cundy backed the Whites to get something from their trip to north London on Monday night.
Cundy said, “You have got Leeds.
“Don’t take Leeds lightly because they are decent. You are thinking you’ll pull Leeds’ pants down.”
O’Hara added, “I don’t think we will pull their pants down, but I think we will beat them.”
Cundy continued, “It would not surprise me if Leeds get something.
“I will be dirty Leeds.”
The Whites can control the relegation race
Leeds are all but safe now, and their Premier League status could be confirmed before they even take on Tottenham next Monday night.
That means they could end up playing a huge role in deciding which of the two London clubs goes down.
West Ham will be desperate for Leeds to stay fully focused against Spurs, knowing a result in north London could keep the relegation fight alive.
At the same time, Leeds could also deliver the final blow to the Hammers’ survival hopes when the two sides meet at the London Stadium on the final day of the season.
