Newcastle United may have escaped with a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Millwall, but the narrow result has done little to prevent questions being raised about the performance of one particular player.

While Joe Willock’s late goal ultimately secured Newcastle’s place in the next round of the Carabao Cup, the Magpies were made to work extremely hard by a determined Millwall side. The Championship outfit even came close to taking the lead before Newcastle finally found the breakthrough.

At the centre of the criticism is Jacob Murphy, whose display has attracted particularly strong scrutiny.

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane is understood to have been highly critical of Murphy’s contribution, with the pundit’s assessment focusing on the winger’s mistakes and the danger they created for Newcastle. But Keane was not the only major football voice to question Murphy’s performance.

However, Murphy has the opportunity to respond in the best possible way — on the pitch.

Footballers regularly experience criticism, and one difficult performance does not define an entire season. Murphy has already shown throughout his Newcastle career that he can produce important moments. The winger has previously been praised for his attacking contribution and has even received Newcastle’s Player of the Month award after a strong run of form.

The challenge now is to rediscover that level.

Newcastle will take confidence from the fact that they remain unbeaten under Matthias Jaissle and progressed in the competition. The manager will undoubtedly be more concerned with the overall performance, the team’s tactical development and the fact that his side managed to find a way to win a difficult cup tie.

Yet the individual criticism surrounding Murphy is unlikely to disappear immediately.

The final score may show Newcastle 1–0 Millwall, but the discussion afterwards has been about much more than the goal. It has been about missed opportunities, individual decisions, defensive vulnerability and whether certain players are performing at the level expected of them.

And with Roy Keane and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer both highlighting concerns over Jacob Murphy’s display, the winger now has something to prove.

The response can only come through his football.

If Murphy delivers a strong performance in Newcastle’s next match, the criticism could quickly become a distant memory. But if similar mistakes continue, the pressure surrounding him will inevitably increase.
