And it’s been in the last three or so years, relatively shortly after much-maligned owner Mike Ashley sold the club to a Saudi-led consortium, that the Magpies have been considered a regular challenger for top four and Champions League credentials.

What with the investment from the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), the club are far more well-versed in the transfer market – and, as such, have been able to pick up some great players. With that, all fans will know and understand, comes a lofty wage bill.

But how well paid are the current squad at new manager Matthias Jaissle’s disposal? The German manager has arrived as Eddie Howe’s replacement and while he’s dealt with huge departures including Bruno Guimaraes he’s persuaded Lewis Hall to extend his stay on Tyneside.

Nick Pope has lost his number one spot in Newcastle’s team, and his status as their highest paid goalkeeper. Having signed a new contract in July 2022, the 33-year-old pockets £60,000-per-week, but had been expected to depart this summer as he enters the final 12 months of his deal.

Lukas Hornicek has replaced Pope between the sticks and on the wage list as the Czech shot-stopper is earning £90,000 each week. Fellow new arrival Ewen Jaouen appears to have become Jaissle’s cup competition goalie and the French youngster is making £30,000 per week.

Veteran goalkeeper Mark Gillespie remains at St James’ Park and he is earning just £15,000 per week. The 34-year-old signed a new one-year deal in the summer despite not playing a single minute last season.

In defence, there have been changes in recent years, including this summer following Kieran Trippier’s departure. Manchester United were keen on luring Hall away from the Magpies, but they dug their heels in and even ended up agreeing on a new contract. He was on £35,000 per week, but that’s risen to £45,000 and could yet rise when more details about his new terms emerge.

Sven Botman is the highest-earning defender in Jaissle’s squad, taking home £140,000 per week. The Dutch defender penned a new deal in January to extend his stay with the Premier League club.

Newly-appointed captain Dan Burn is sitting on £70,000-per-week. The English defender is a fan favourite and viewed as one of the most important figures on and off the pitch at St James’ Park.

Malick Thiaw has become a regular starter since heading to Tyneside from AC Milan last summer and the German opted to do so after agreeing on a £75,000 per week contract. Joining him on the same salary is Fabian Schar, who is now the club’s longest-serving player.

Versatile full-back Amar Dedic arrived in the summer and the Bosnian has been handed a handsome £90,000 per week salary. Previously admired by Manchester City, Tino Livramento is a proud alumnus of Chelsea’s Cobham academy, but he’s found a home for himself at Newcastle. The Englishman, 22, earns £50,000 – which is slightly more than compatriot Hall.

After selling Guimaraes and Tonali, Newcastle have more than balanced the books in the middle of the park. Their highest earning midfielder is now Joelinton whose transformation into one of the division’s hardest-working midfielders is boldly impressive – and it’s something not many expected. The versatile ace earns £150,000-per-week.

Nico Gonzalez has made an impressive start and looks a real shrewd signing for the Magpies. The Spanish midfield maestro receives £100,000 per week after deciding he’d be given more first-team opportunities by Jaissle.

The Magpies swooped for Jacob Ramsey last summer, perhaps preparing for this summer’s midfield rebuild. He’s been impressive under Jaissle and you’d expect him to be given his £120,000 per week salary.

Jaissle appears to like Joe Willock and the former Arsenal midfielder has remained on Tyneside after a summer of uncertainty. He has a year left on his £80,000 per week contract he signed back in August 2021.

As for Lewis Miley, he is regarded as the club’s future, and they secured his long-term future in the summer with a pay rise. Their 19-year-old academy graduate now earns £45,000 per week, up from a mere £5,000 he’d been taking home since breaking into the senior squad.

Sean Steur is likewise on the same amount and, at 18 he could be partnering Miley in midfield for years to come. A focus on youth is reflected on the club’s wage bill in comparison to the vast amounts of money paid last season.

Anthony Gordon was another top earner who departed Newcastle in the summer, heading to Barcelona and reducing the club’s wage bill. The English winger’s exit means Yoane Wissa sits at the top of the attackers’ list, and he’s starting to live up to expectations while making £140,000 per week.

Another player who has bounced back under Jaissle is Anthony Elanga after the Carrington graduate, 23, struggled during his debut season. The speedy Swede is taking home £100,000 per week and he’ll be crucial if the Toon Army are to have something to celebrate come the end of the campaign.

It’s hard to argue that Jacob Murphy doesn’t deserve his £35,000 pay packet after a career-best campaign of nine goals and 14 assists. Now 30, how long the winger has left in the tank at the highest level remains to be seen – but, for now, he’s great value for money for a club looking to assert themselves.

Harvey Barnes, 27 and a two-cap England international, earns £80,000 on a weekly basis in the northeast of the country. William Osula pockets a fraction of what Barnes does – £25,000-per-week, though that could well rise in the coming years.

Matias Fernandez-Pardo is an exciting addition to Jaissle’s squad and the Belgian attacking ace is taking home £75,000 per week. Bazoumana Toure has lightning pace and the Toon Army will be hoping the £45,000 paid to their new Ivorian winger weekly is worth every penny.
