The Al Nassr man has been linked with an unlikely return to the Premier League.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano has issued an update on reports linking Cristiano Ronaldo with a surprise transfer to Newcastle United.
Ronaldo, 41, has previously enjoyed two stints in the Premier League with Manchester United, having also represented Sporting CP, Juventus, Real Madrid and current side Al Nassr.
Just last month, Ronaldo reportedly went on strike due to feeling that other clubs – such as Al Hilal – are being prioritised in the transfer window by owners, the Public Investment Fund.
PIF also own Al Ahli, Al Ittihad and Premier League side Newcastle United.
Ronaldo was not included in Al Nassr’s squad for fixtures against Al Ittihad and Al Riyadh, as well as against Arkadag FK, before returning and scoring a brace in a 4-0 win over Al Hazem on 21 February.
Despite the five-time Ballon d’Or winner returning to action, several reports have linked him with a transfer to Newcastle United.
In late February, Football Insider reported that Newcastle were eyeing a move for the Portuguese forward, which would only be viable if he was prepared to take a cut on his reported £3.5 million per week salary.
As reported by Capology, Newcastle’s current highest earner is captain Bruno Guimarães, who receives around £160,000 per week.
So, could Ronaldo be playing his football at St James’ Park come the 2026/27 campaign?
In his latest YouTube video, posted on Sunday (8 March), Romano revealed what he knows about the rumours.
“Many people have asked me in recent days about this topic, and perhaps there were some links in England, but this is completely fake news, of course,” Romano said.
“There is absolutely nothing at all between Cristiano Ronaldo and Newcastle United. I don’t think that we need to clarify.”
Ronaldo, who has netted 21 goals in 22 games so far this season, is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, with Al Nassr head coach Jorge Jesus admitting that the issue is “more serious” than the medical team first thought.
It remains unclear whether Ronaldo will feature during the international break, with Portugal national football team set to face Mexico national football team and the United States men’s national soccer team on 29 March and 1 April respectively.
Over the weekend, Ronaldo travelled to Spain for treatment and will be hoping to return to action not only to help bolster Al Nassr’s chances of securing the Saudi Pro League title but also to guide Portugal to a maiden FIFA World Cup triumph this summer.
