Newcastle United player ratings as Nick Pope stars, but 9/10 star gets man of the match

The Magpies picked up a huge victory at Turf Moor to end their poor run of form

Newcastle United picked up a vital win at Turf Moor – but were made to sweat for it as the relegation-haunted Clarets put them under the cosh.

The Magpies got off to a flying start after 65 seconds after Joelinton hooked past Martin Dubravka after Anthony Gordon’s left wing cross to put Newcastle ahead. By the seventh minute it was 2-0 through Yoane Wissa at the second bite of the cherry following pressure from Harvey Barnes and Bruno Guimaraes.

But Burnley refused to give in and pulled one back through ex-Hartlepool man Josh Laurent who fired home on 23 minutes. Burnley piled on the pressure but Newcastle put the lid on it when Martin Dubravka and Hjalmar Ekdal got in a mix up and Bruno applied the finish.

Here’s how the Magpies fared at Turf Moor:

Nick Pope 8

Some vital saves as he re-established himself between the posts after injury.

Lewis Miley 8

Continues to do a sterling job at right-back and made some mature decisions throughout. Five vital clearances.

Malick Thiaw 7

Unlucky to see one cleared off the line. But hacked and cleared like

Fabian Schar 8

A big performance by one of the big characters in Howe’s side.

Lewis Hall 8

Had a couple of injury scares but frightened the Clarets going forward.

Joelinton 9

Made a huge difference back in his enforcer role. The opening goal set the tone and he dominated in the air. Man of the match.

Sandro Tonali 8

A key pass forward that led to the third goal.

Bruno Guimaraes 8

Chased everything and got his reward in stoppage time with a vital goal.

Anthony Gordon 7

Was on fire in the opening moments and made some telling contributions, not least the cross for Joelinton’s opener.

Harvey Barnes 5

Started well but could not hold on to the ball in the second half, leading to plenty of Burnley pressure. No surprise to see his number come up.

Yoane Wissa 7

Grabbed his early goal but could have one or two more. Isolated for long periods in the second half before going off.

Subs

Jacob Murphy 5 (for Barnes 72)

A horror miss that should have sealed three points.

Nick Woltemade (for Wissa 79)

Jacob Ramsey (for Gordon 79)

Joe Willock (for Joelinton 90)

*Subs must play 15 minutes.
