French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen became Newcastle United’s first summer signing this week, arriving from Stade de Reims for around £18m.
Newcastle has a strong history of French players becoming successful and popular at the club. The likes of David Ginola and Yohan Cabaye immediately spring to mind, and then, of course, there’s Allan Saint-Maximin, who amassed an almost cult-like following.
The tricky winger was immensely popular on Tyneside, as he was about the only thing we had to bring any joy during the Steve Bruce days with his myriad tricks.
Saint-Maximin’s bond with the fans was massive, and although the Frenchman has moved on to several clubs since leaving St James’ Park, it’s clear that Newcastle still holds a special place in his heart.
Saint-Maximin: Jaouen has joined the best club in the world
Indeed, he confirmed as much this week when he left a message for Ewen Jaouen in which he gushed about the club. Demba Ba, who managed Jaouen during a loan spell at Dunkerque, also sent a message to the new signing.
Both players spoke highly of the club and the fans, but it was Saint-Maximin whose words are likely to resonate most with those fans who still clamour for his return.
“You are joining my club. My favourite club. The best club in the world, in my opinion.
“It’s a very family-orientated club, a club that transformed my career and changed my life.
“I wish you all the best and take care. If you need anything, don’t hesitate, my friend.”
MLS move for Saint-Maximin
Having just left Ligue 1 side Lens, following previous spells in Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Mexico, Saint-Maximin is on the move again.
The winger, 29, has agreed to sign for MLS side Charlotte FC, joining Dean Smith and Wilfried Zaha in America on a free transfer.
It’s just as well that Jaouen mentioned Saint-Maximin when he was naming French players who have played for Newcastle in the car on the way from the airport, or that could have been awkward.
It’s great to hear former players speak so highly of the club, especially when the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin were arguably here during the darkest days.
