One team’s former employee is another team’s senior passing game coordinator. Bobby Slowik, who was fired by the Houston Texans after they lost in the second-round of the NFL playoffs, was hired Tuesday night by the Miami Dolphins to serve in the newly-created senior position and serve as a mentor to quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Slowik previously served as mentor to quarterback C.J. Stroud while he was in Houston. In 2023, Stroud threw for more than 4,000 yards. He became only the fifth rookie to do so. Miami’s current passing game coordinator, Darrell Bevell, who doubles as quarterback coach, might have his responsibilities juggled to fit Slowik into the mix. Bevell interviewed for the Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator position, but was ultimately not hired as the position went to former Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly. Slowik is now back coaching with Mike McDaniel, the Dolphins’ head coach. The two worked together for the San Francisco 49ers from 2017-2021. Slowik is also the younger brother of Ryan Slowik, the Dolphins’ defensive backs coach and pass game specialist. The 37 year-old Bobby Slowik was a head coaching candidate for several teams in 2024 when Stroud was the offensive rookie of the year. He also interviewed with several teams for their open head coaching positions this cycle. Most notably, with the New York Jets. Slowik was recently rumored to be a candidate to take over as offensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles. He would have taken the place of Kellen Moore, who was announced as the new head coach of the New Orleans Saints. The Slowik hiring was first reported by Tom Pelissero of NFL.com. He made the announcement via social media. McDaniel used to work for the 49ers and was the run game coordinator from 2017-2020. He was then elevated to offensive coordinator in 2021. Bobby Slowik was the 49ers defensive quality control coach beginning in 2017 until he was promoted to offensive assistant in 2019 and then offensive passing game specialist in 2021. While in Houston, Slowik developed Stroud into the dual-threat quarterback he is today. The rookie had a breakout season in 2023, but had an average season in 2024 primarily due to the amount of injuries the Texans suffered on the offensive line.
