The Philadelphia Eagles brought home Super Bowl LIX Sunday night, which means NFL Draft season is officially here. New England has the fourth overall pick, and after taking quarterback Drake Maye in round one of last year’s draft, they need someone to protect him. Pro Football Focus ranked the Patriots as the worst offensive line in the NFL this past season, and they can’t have that happen again if they want Maye to improve in year two. ESPN’s Field Yates published his mock draft on Tuesday and had New England taking LSU’s offensive lineman Will Campbell with the No. 4 pick to address that need. “There is a case for taking the best player available, and per my own board, that would be Michigan defensive tackle Mason Graham.” Yates wrote. “Not a bad fit. But offensive tackle is a massive need for the Patriots, and Campbell is my highest-graded player at the position in this class (No. 6 overall). He has excellent footwork to mirror opposing pass rushers screaming off the edge and the body control to absorb power and then reset his feet.” New Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel is familiar with drafting offensive linemen in the first round. When he was the head coach of the Tennessee Titans for six seasons, the team selected offensive tackles Isaiah Wilson in 2020 and Peter Skoronski in 2023. Passing up an elite pass rusher like Penn State’s edge Abdul Carter or Colorado’s cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter will be difficult, but getting someone to keep Maye upright is the most significant need this offseason. The Patriots have well over $100 million in cap space this offseason, so they could sign some offensive linemen in free agency and take the best available player at four, but addressing the offensive line has to be done either in the free agent market or the first round of the draft.
