When someone asks, “Who is the best shooter you’ve ever seen?” what kind of player comes to mind? Do you think of the one with the highest scoring average, the most career points, or the one who could hit shots from deep or under pressure?
In a previous post, I listed my top 20 scorers of all time and named my #1 pick. Many agreed with my choice of Max Abmas, though some thought I was off the mark. I admit there was some subjectivity in my decision, but I believe I backed it up with my criteria.

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but I struggle to see how anyone could call Wilt Chamberlain the best scorer. Yes, I know how many points he scored, but I think he was the most athletic player in NBA history. In my book, The G.O.A.T.: The Quest to Find the Best, he’s in my all-time top 5.
I watched him play, and he rarely shot from outside 10 feet, was a poor free-throw shooter, and played in an era when “big men” were only 6’6″. I’ve given reasons why I didn’t choose Wilt or other great scorers, but this post is about a different aspect of the game: shooting. Using analytics like percentage, efficiency, and shot selection, picking the best shooter of all time should be a bit less controversial.
