Newcastle Actively Looking to Sell Yoanne Wissa
Newcastle United are actively pushing to sell Yoanne Wissa less than a year after signing him for £55m, according to The Athletic.
The Magpies have endured a poor campaign in the Premier League this year and sit 14th in the table, with a very slim chance of earning qualification for European football next season with just four games remaining.
That has led to manager Eddie Howe plotting a major overhaul of his squad in the upcoming transfer window, and it has now emerged that he is ready to part ways with the man he chased for much of the last summer window.
Wissa, who has been described as ‘extraordinary’, joined in a £55m deal last summer on deadline day, after a huge saga which included the DR Congo star going on strike at Brentford to push through the move.
Newcastle initially looked to sign all of Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike, and Jorgen Strand Larsen before finally committing to a deal for the 29-year-old, but he has gone on to make just 24 appearances this season, including just one start in the last 16 games.
The Magpies are now ‘actively pushing’ to sell the striker ahead of their summer overhaul, but it’s understood that Wissa wants to stay and fight for his place at St James’ Park after signing a long-term contract less than a year ago.
A new striker is being targeted by Howe, and with Wissa, Nick Woltemade, Anthony Gordon and William Osula all playing in the role at different stages this season, a departure or two is needed to fund that.
Newcastle Wasted Millions on Wissa
Wissa enjoyed a sensational season at Brentford last time around, scoring 19 Premier League goals in 35 appearances, but at Newcastle he has really struggled to find any type of rhythm or form.
He has managed just three goals in all competitions, and Howe has opted to use Gordon as a centre forward more regularly, which shows how much Wissa has disappointed.
An exit now looks inevitable, with the club pushing to get rid of him, and no matter what Wissa wants, if he wants to play then he will surely be on the way out.
