Newcastle United leader Jamaal Lascelles is free to leave the club during the January transfer window.

Lascelles has made 253 appearances for the Magpies since joining from Nottingham Forest a decade ago but only two of those have come this season, both of which were substitute appearances against AFC Bournemouth and Arsenal in September.

United head into Saturday’s FA Cup third round tie at home to Bournemouth with Malick Thiaw and Sven Botman the only senior centre-backs available.

Fabian Schar was stretchered off during the 4-3 comeback win over Leeds United on Wednesday night and while his ankle injury isn’t as bad as first feared, the former Switzerland international is set for spell on the sidelines with ligament damage.

Dan Burn is still a few weeks away as he recovers from the rib and lung injury he sustained in last month’s Tyne-Wear derby defeat away to Sunderland.

Lascelles, meanwhile, isn’t physically ready to be involved in the matchday squad, as suggested by Eddie Howe, who then confirmed the 32-year-old could leave before the January transfer window closes.

The former Toon skipper is out of contract at the end of the season and has previously attracted interest from clubs in Turkey.

“He’s not training with us currently,” Howe said. “He hasn’t felt well enough physically to train… good enough. I don’t necessarily think that he’s injured in the sense that he’s got one big injury, I just think his body’s not feeling great.

“So he’s not training with us currently. We hope that will change in the next few weeks.

“But yeah, there’s a possibility that he could leave as well. Jamaal’s been an incredible servant. He’s a great leader for us behind the scenes. So, let’s wait and see what happens on his future.”

Which other players could leave Newcastle United?

Kieran Trippier is also out of contract in June, while striker Will Osula has attracted interest overseas, including Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt.

Newcastle are open to letting Osula leave, but only if there is a view to bring the 22-year-old back to St James’ Park in the future.

“I think the only way that we would consider that would be for his development and growth in terms of benefiting his career to play but always with a view to him coming back to us,” Howe said earlier this month.

“He’s injured at the moment. I think the main priority for Will is just to focus on getting fit.I don’t think he’s close, but I think he’s improving. So hopefully we’ll see him towards the end of the month.

“Big for us to get him back fit.Big for him because I know he’s been hugely frustrated by this injury when he had a lot of opportunities to play. Prior to his injury, I thought he was in a really good place and doing well. As with every player, we make a decision when we need to.”
