Woltemade got off to a flying start at Newcastle with nine goals in the first half of the season, but then found himself on the bench before being shifted to a midfield position by Eddie Howe.
And after finishing the campaign as a No 10, the £69million man feels he ended the season on a high with 11 goals and improved displays – and believes that the demanding nature of the Premier League has prepped him well for Group E games against Curacao, Ivory Coast and Ecuador.

Woltemade said: “It’s the best preparation you can have because it is the hardest league.
“We have played Champions League and a lot of Premier League games too. It can’t be harder, especially athletically – it has helped me a lot because you have more sprints, more duels, and you always have to be in the moment because the league is so hard.

“And that helps me a lot. I started with a lot of goals and had good games.”
And reflecting on a season that has resulted in reports linking him with a move back to the Bundesliga, Woltemade assured Newcastle fans of his future and said: “There were difficult periods for me also but in the last games I was getting better.
“For my first season, I think I am fine, I scored some goals as well and had good movements, you could see in my games I developed, and I also had the quality to be a good player in this league.”
Speaking on Germany’s World Cup chances, after his country went out of the 2018 and 2022 tournaments in the group stage, Woltemade said to CBS in America: “It is the biggest stage for us and really exciting.
“Germany has a really good history, but the last two tournaments have not been great for us. Now we want to do better, and I am really proud to play in a World Cup with Germany, which has a really great history, so I am really grateful, and we have some great players.
“We have a good team, good players, and we hope we can go far, but we are concentrating on the next game and the next training session.
