Leeds United are mathematically confirmed to stay in the Premier League following West Ham’s 1-0 defeat at home against Arsenal at the London Stadium earlier today.
West Ham thought they had clinched a point at the death only for VAR to overrule the goal and hand all three points to Arsenal in the capital today.
The win took Arsenal one step closer to their first Premier League title in 22 years, while it pushed West Ham towards relegation with just two games left in the season.
West Ham are just a point behind Tottenham, who have a game in hand, and the Hammers desperately need Leeds to beat Spurs in north London on Monday night.
West Ham boss issues plea to Leeds United – ‘Anything can happen’
The Hammers were unlucky to lose today. However, they are in a desperate situation and are the favourites to go down to the Championship.
A win for Tottenham on Monday night will take them four points clear of West Ham with two games left in the season, and that would be catastrophic for Nuno Espirito Santo’s team.
West Ham need Leeds United to win or at least not lose against Tottenham to ensure they can take this fight until the final day of the season.
Nuno has admitted that he will watch the Tottenham vs Leeds game on Monday night while preparing his team for the Newcastle United clash next weekend.
He insisted that anything can still happen in the Premier League and his team are still in with a chance of survival.
The West Ham boss told Sky Sports: “We watch every game – let’s see what happens.
“Time to rest and prepare well for Newcastle.
“Anything can happen.”
The Whites can relax
Leeds can now approach the final three Premier League games with a bit more freedom after effectively securing survival.
Even so, Daniel Farke will not want standards to slip and will be pushing his side to finish as high up the table as possible.
There is still significant money to play for depending on where Leeds finish, and that could have a big impact on what the club can do in the summer transfer window.
Tottenham, meanwhile, will be hoping a more relaxed Leeds side on Monday night works in their favour as they chase a crucial home win to boost their own survival hopes.
