This part of the season was meant to be crucial for Raducanu, who had previously admitted that she held back earlier in the year to focus on competing more in this stretch of the calendar.
Raducanu expressed a particular desire to play in Asia, given her personal connection to the region. China holds special significance for her, as her mother is from the country, and Raducanu spent a lot of time there during her childhood. She also speaks fluent Mandarin, further emphasizing her bond with China.
Unfortunately, she hasn’t had many opportunities to play there, as events in China only resumed last year, and she was sidelined by injury at that time as well.
This year was supposed to be Emma Raducanu’s long-awaited chance to compete in China, but things haven’t gone as planned. Her first stop in Asia was at the Korea Open, where she performed well, winning a few matches and reaching the quarter-finals.
However, during her match against Daria Kasatkina, Raducanu struggled with a foot injury and was forced to retire. Despite her hope for a quick recovery, she soon had to rule out participation in the China Open in Beijing.
There was still a possibility of her playing in the Wuhan Open, but Raducanu has now officially withdrawn from that WTA 1000 event as well. This is a significant setback, not only because the tournaments were in China, a place of personal importance to her, but also because WTA 1000 events offer valuable ranking points.
Raducanu needed those points to improve her ranking and avoid difficult draws in future tournaments. Her decision not to participate in qualifiers at events like Cincinnati earlier this year has put extra pressure on her to boost her ranking through main draw appearances.
