Granit Xhaka has marked the first anniversary of his move to Sunderland with a message to fans
Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka has delivered a heartfelt message to supporters via social media, celebrating the first anniversary of him joining the club.
The Swiss veteran arrived at the Stadium of Light on July 30th of last year, and has since established himself as a vital component in a side that went on to exceed all expectations by finishing seventh in the Premier League last season, qualifying for the Europa League in the process.
Earlier this summer, it had looked as if Xhaka could be destined for a shock departure from Sunderland, with recently appointed Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso identifying the midfielder as a key transfer target at Stamford Bridge. Ultimately, however, the 33-year-old has opted to stay put on Wearside, and with the new season now less than a month away, he has taken to Instagram to reflect on his time in red and white thus far.
Soundtracked by Elvis Presley’s “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, Xhaka posted a collage of images to his story, alongside the caption: “One year already. Time really flies. Looking back, it’s incredible what we’ve built together in such a short time. Grateful for every challenge, every lesson, and every unforgettable moment. Ready for another season. Let’s make it even bigger.”
Addressing Xhaka’s decision to stay at Sunderland in a recent press conference, head coach Regis Le Bris said: “This topic is closed. He has been really clear about his future. He loves Sunderland, he wants to stay in Sunderland. He wants to make the future of Sunderland. He is a good captain. Great leader.”
