Lutsharel Geertruida confirmed his departure from Sunderland in a social media post on Thursday.
The former Feyenoord defender joined the Black Cats on a season-long loan during the final days of what had been a hectic summer transfer window and he went on to make 30 appearances in all competitions as Regis Le Bris’ side secured a seventh place finish in the Premier League and earned a place in the Europa League for the first time in the club’s history.
There had been speculation suggesting Geertruida could become a permanent member of the Black Cats squad during this summer’s transfer window and Sunderland confirmed they were in discussions with the RB Leipzig star when they released details of their retained list last month. However, the 26-year-old has now confirmed his departure as he returns to his parent club and wished Sunderland ‘the very best for the future’.
In a social media post, the Netherlands international said: “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to represent Sunderland this past season. Making my Premier League debut at such a special club is something I’ll always be proud of, and being part of such a historic season makes it even more memorable. A big thank you to my team mates, the staff and everyone connected to the club for support throughout the year. I’ve enjoyed every moment, both on and off the pitch. I wish everyone at Sunderland nothing but the very best for the future. Thank you and good luck.”
Several of Geertruida’s former Black Cats team-mates have been quick to react to his comments as captain Granit Xhaka led the way as the Switzerland international replied: ‘My brother, we will always love you’. Nordi Mukiele said ‘big loveeeee’ and Romaine Mundle described the versatile defender as ‘the best’. Brian Brobbey and Chris Rigg also replied with emojis showing their sadness over Geertruida’s emotional comments about his time on Wearside.
