Gilbert Arenas recently shared his thoughts on the Golden State Warriors’ contract situation with Jonathan Kuminga during an episode of Gil’s Arena.
Arenas expressed doubt about the Warriors’ sincerity in offering Kuminga a max contract, suggesting the team might be bluffing to save money. According to Arenas, the Warriors may hope Kuminga accepts an early extension to avoid having to pay him more later, but they’re prepared to evaluate his performance first.
Arenas explained that if Kuminga has a breakout season—averaging something like 20 points and 10 rebounds—the Warriors would likely offer him the full $224 million. However, if his performance is more modest, the Warriors could offer him something closer to $150 million.
Given Kuminga’s restricted free agent status, the Warriors are not under pressure to make a decision immediately. They can match any offer he receives in free agency, giving them flexibility to see how Kuminga performs before committing to a large deal.
Kuminga, who enters the final year of his rookie contract, posted career-high numbers last season with averages of 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.2 assists on 52.9% shooting. Despite these improvements, reports suggest the Warriors are hesitant to offer him a max extension.
They are likely taking a “wait-and-see” approach, according to The Athletic’s Anthony Slater, choosing to evaluate his progress this season before making any major financial commitments.
