Newcastle player ratings vs Man City as Lewis Hall shines but Nick Woltemade has worst game yet
Newcastle United made a frankly pathetic exit from the FA Cup on Saturday with a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Manchester City.
While losing to City is no great shame, the way in which the Magpies capitulated after taking the lead was difficult to watch.
A stunning goal from Harvey Barnes gave Newcastle United a deserved lead in the 18th minute after a brilliant start from Eddie Howe’s side.

City, as they always do, eventually grew into it and levelled the scores on the stroke of half time through Savinho, who simply allowed a Jeremy Doku cutback to hit him before dribbling into the net.
A brace from Omar Marmoush after the break then sealed Newcastle’s FA Cup exit.

Aaron Ramsdale – 6
Shaky when playing out from the back and did not fully convince when trying to save some of City’s shots.
Kieran Trippier – 6
Excellent tracking back stopped Tijjani Reijnders from scoring a quick-fire second after Savinho’s opener.
Sven Botman – 5
Helped set up the Barnes goal with an excellent turn but became increasingly sloppy like the rest of his teammates.
Will Newcastle United ever see the best of Sven Botman again or would you sell him?
Malick Thiaw – 5
Not as sloppy as Botman but Thiaw was not at his best here.
Was certainly made to work by Savinho but still put in a fine performance. Would have been a lot worse without him.
Sandro Tonali – 6
Dictated play for much of the first half. Marked out of it in the second.
Joe Willock – 6
Broke play well up and drove the team forward. Still doesn’t convince, however.
Anthony Elanga – 5
Tried his best and caused City problems at times but decision-making still erratic.
Nick Woltemade – 3
Ineffective throughout, after seeing a header cleared off the line by Nico Gonzalez. Strong tackle in the 46th minute was the only other moment of note.
Really bad display and surely his worst in black and white yet. Woltemade gets unfair criticism at times but it would also be wrong to sugarcoat a poor performance just because of that.
Harvey Barnes – 6
Stunning finish for the goal but did very little else.
William Osula – 5
A willing runner but couldn’t get into the game.
