There are uncertainties surrounding the starting backcourt of Jalen Suggs and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. While the Magic are confident in having one of the league’s best defensive backcourts, questions arise on the offensive side.
Orlando has committed to Suggs as the starting point guard, but how much responsibility he’ll take on and how effective he’ll be in that role is still unknown. Meanwhile, Caldwell-Pope, who had a defined role in Denver, may need to take on more duties in Orlando, such as being a secondary playmaker and increasing his shooting volume.
The bench situation, however, is clearer. Cole Anthony and Anthony Black offer complementary skills that will be crucial for the second unit. Cole Anthony is a strong scorer and creator, having averaged 11.6 points per game on 43.5% shooting from the field and 33.8% from beyond the arc.
Although inconsistent throughout last season—he started strong, averaging over 15 points per game in October and November—off-court issues may have impacted his performance. Going into the new season, the Magic expect Anthony to be more efficient and lead the bench effectively. Despite his defensive limitations due to size, his relentless effort and energy are evident, and he’s been a part of the team’s highly rated defense.
Anthony Black’s defensive versatility will be key in pairing with Cole Anthony. At 6’7″, Black has shown the ability to guard multiple positions, both on and off the ball. While his minutes were limited last season, his advanced defensive stats, including a 108.9 defensive rating and 1.5 defensive win shares, offer a glimpse of his potential. Black exemplifies the Magic’s defensive culture.

Offensively, there are more questions for Black. Although he shot 39.4% from three, his attempts were limited. His shooting will be crucial for the bench unit to maintain spacing and offensive threat. With his size and point guard experience from college, Black has the ability to attack the rim and create opportunities for teammates.
Though he didn’t get many chances to showcase his playmaking last season, his flashes of difficult passes and risk-taking on offense suggest that his development as a facilitator will be essential to the Magic’s offensive growth.
