Shearer Rips Into ‘Absent’ star After Villa Loss: “It Simply Can’t Keep Happening”

Alan Shearer pulled no punches in his post-match analysis following Newcastle United’s damaging defeat to Aston Villa, directly singling out Bazoumana Touré after another anonymous performance on the pitch. The Premier League’s all-time leading scorer expressed his frustration at how easily Newcastle’s frontline was neutralized, insisting that “it can’t keep happening” if the Magpies have genuine ambitions of competing near the top of the table.
Touré, who arrived with plenty of expectation, struggled to leave any meaningful mark on the contest. Operating out wide, the attacker managed just a handful of touches throughout his time on the pitch, failing to register a shot on target or complete a single successful dribble against a well-organized Villa backline. His reluctance to press aggressively or demand the ball left Newcastle completely toothless in transition, forcing Mathias Jaissle to overhaul his frontline options during the second half.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer pulled no punches when evaluating the winger’s contribution:
”When you wear that shirt, especially at home, you have to compete and show physical presence. Touré was completely absent out there today. He gave the Aston Villa defenders an easy afternoon—no runs, no intensity, no threat whatsoever. You cannot play with passengers in games of this magnitude. It simply cannot keep happening.”
