Sunderland’s Dramatic Torreense Win Has Sparked Fresh Debate — And The Referee’s Record Makes The Controversial Moments Even More Interesting

Sunderland secured a dramatic 2–1 Europa League victory over Torreense on Thursday night, but the celebrations following Noah Sadiki’s stoppage-time winner were accompanied by questions about the officiating, a disallowed goal and a late penalty incident that left supporters with plenty to discuss.
The Referee’s Record Was Already Raising Eyebrows Before Kick-Off
An intriguing detail emerged before the match even began.
Albanian referee Enea Jorgji had recorded 27 yellow cards, two red cards and five penalties across his first six matches of the season. His career record also included 2,191 yellow cards, 101 red cards and 156 penalties across 465 matches.
Those figures attracted attention because Sunderland were heading into a European fixture against Portuguese opposition with a referee whose disciplinary and penalty statistics stood out.
However, the numbers alone do not establish that Jorgji would favour either side or that his decisions would be controversial. What followed on the pitch nevertheless gave supporters plenty to debate.
Sunderland Had A Goal Ruled Out — And The Decision Frustrated Le Bris

One of the evening’s talking points came when Sunderland appeared to have taken the lead through Timur Tutierov.
The youngster turned the ball into the net following a long throw, but the referee had already stopped play for a foul involving Omar Alderete in the build-up.
The decision was checked by VAR and upheld, leaving Régis Le Bris and his coaching staff visibly frustrated. It was particularly irritating for Sunderland because the team had struggled to turn its possession into clear-cut opportunities.
For Sunderland supporters, the incident raised questions about the physicality permitted during set pieces and whether their team was being penalised too frequently in those situations.
Nevertheless, the available reporting does not establish that the decision was incorrect.
The Late Penalty Incident Added Another Layer Of Drama
The controversy did not end there.
With Sunderland searching for a winner, Tutierov appeared to have earned a late penalty after being bundled over inside the box. The initial celebrations were short-lived, however, as an offside flag brought the incident to an end.
The subsequent review produced an unusual twist: Tutierov was found to have been onside, but the referee was instructed to overturn the penalty decision.
That sequence was bound to generate discussion among supporters, particularly given how late in the match it occurred and how important a winning goal would have been.
It also made the referee’s pre-match statistics an even more interesting talking point in retrospect, although they cannot independently tell us whether the decisions were right or wrong.
Torreense Made Sunderland Work For Every Inch
The officiating was not the only reason the match became such a talking point.
Torreense took the lead through Volnei Feltes’ spectacular strike in the 37th minute, putting Sunderland under unexpected pressure.
Le Bris responded by introducing more experienced players, and the changes helped transform the game. Jules Ahoka equalised in the 67th minute before Sadiki struck in the 90+3rd minute to complete a dramatic comeback.
The result secured Sunderland another Europa League victory, but the performance was far from straightforward.
Some supporters questioned why Sunderland had needed a stoppage-time winner against opponents from Portugal’s second tier. Others pointed to Torreense’s defensive organisation, the quality of their goalkeeper and the difficulties created by Sunderland’s heavily rotated starting line-up.
Both perspectives can be true: Sunderland deserved credit for finding a way to win, while their performance still left room for criticism.
The Bigger Question Sunderland Fans Will Be Asking
The most intriguing aspect of the evening is how many separate talking points emerged from a match that ultimately ended in victory.
There was the disallowed goal, the late penalty incident, the referee’s eye-catching disciplinary record and Sunderland’s struggle to break down a determined opponent.
For supporters, those incidents provide plenty of material for debate. But the distinction between a controversial moment and an incorrect decision remains important.
Sunderland got the result they wanted, but the debate surrounding the Torreense match is unlikely to disappear immediately. The late winner delivered the celebrations, while the disputed incidents and the team’s performance provided the arguments that followed.
And with Sunderland continuing their European campaign, the biggest test will be whether they can build on the victory while addressing the concerns that emerged during an unexpectedly difficult evening in Portugal.
