FC Barcelona has been missing several key players during the early stages of the 2024-25 season. The midfield has been particularly short-handed, and two crucial defenders, Ronald Araujo and Andreas Christensen, are still recovering from long-term injuries.
This situation has opened doors for other players to step up, notably Marc Casado, who has been regularly featured in midfield for Flick. Additionally, Sergi Domínguez and Gerard Martin have also been receiving significant playing time in recent matches.
A new defensive leader has emerged this season in Spanish center-back Inigo Martinez. The former Athletic Club player has been a constant presence in Flick’s lineup and has impressed with his tenacity and aggressive defensive approach.Coach Ancelotti of Real Madrid “Gives Up” on Vinicius Jr., Saying
Following the 1-0 victory over Getafe, Flick praised Martinez’s positive attributes, stating in a press conference, “He is an absolute leader, a fighter. What he does for 90 minutes is incredible. You could see towards the end that he struggled a bit, perhaps from a few knocks, but it’s still great to see. I told him it’s fantastic to have him on the team because he’s an absolute leader.”
This season, Martinez has participated in all seven La Liga matches and the only UEFA Champions League game for Barcelona, playing nearly every minute and being substituted just once, in the 81st minute against Villarreal.
After being linked to a transfer away from the club last summer, the €5m-rated defender is proving to be one of Barcelona’s most vital players this season. Hopefully, he can maintain this high level of performance and secure his spot even when the regular defenders return to the field.
