Thomas Tuchel has explained why Nottingham Forest ace Morgan Gibbs-White is not included in his latest England squad.
Gibbs-White was on the Three Lions boss’ long list of names for the upcoming international camp but failed to make the final cut. It comes after he was also snubbed for this summer’s World Cup, despite finishing last season in brilliant form.
The Reds’ number 10 has been one of the in-form English players in the Premier League during the current calendar year. He almost single-handedly dragged Forest to survival last term, bagging 14 goals in all competitions between January and the end of the campaign.
This time around, he already has two assists and one goal to his name from four Premier League games played. Those stats were still not enough to force his way into Tuchel’s plans, however – a decision that has not gone down well with Reds fans, who have made their feelings clear by taking to social media to express their bewilderment.
The England manager said (via the BBC): “It makes no sense to nominate three, four, five, number 10s. It just does not help anyone.
“We can see the form that Morgan is in and he ended the season very, very strongly and was the key player for Forest to not be relegated. We can see him stepping up now.”
Tuchel went on to reference Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, who has been called up despite missing out on the World Cup. The German continued: “It is one thing to be nominated, by the way, like with Cole (Palmer) and getting your ticket back in the squad. But it’s another thing to perform for England and this also counts.
“So especially also Cole needs to step up when he comes and needs to show these kind of numbers and these kind of performances to get his place, to keep his shirt and to justify the nomination.”
Tuchel has named a 27-man group for the upcoming camp. England will play Nations League fixtures against Spain, Croatia and Czech Republic as the domestic action pauses for three weeks.
Following the Three Lions squad announcement, Gibbs-White’s partner appeared to make a pointed reference to the playmaker’s absence from the group. On Instagram, Britney De Villiers shared a post highlighting one of the Reds ace’s impressive stats to her stories.
The post said: “Morgan Gibbs-White is the only player to have created 5+ chances in a single Premier League game this season.” The 26-year-old had registered a game-high seven chances created in last weekend’s 2-1 triumph over Aston Villa.
Indeed, Gibbs-White was integral to Oliver Glasner’s side clinching three points in the West Midlands. He set up Igor Jesus for the winner with a delightful flick and in doing so became the first Forest player to create seven-plus chances and tee up a goal in a Premier League game since the club’s return to the top flight.
The Reds’ talisman has either scored or assisted in each of his last eight Premier League away games. It is a run only Erling Haaland (September 2023), Robin van Persie (May 2011) and Andrew Cole (December 1993) have bettered – all with nine goal involvements apiece.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Thursday, prior to the England squad being named, Reds head coach Glasner said Gibbs-White had done as much as he could to put himself in contention for a call-up.
Glasner said: “I think he showed maximum effort, commitment and good performances. Then it’s Thomas Tuchel’s decision.
“Morgan showed good performances, he showed how important he is for us. Everything else is Thomas Tuchel’s decision.”
