Newcastle United midfielder Joe Willock answered his critics again with the winning goal in his side’s 1-0 Carabao Cup win against Millwall on Tuesday night.

Having been a bit-part player under Eddie Howe last season, making just 10 Premier League starts across the campaign, Willock has been more of a key Newcastle player under new boss Matthias Jaissle this term.

The 27-year-old was handed his fourth consecutive start in league and cup by the German boss, and despite his opening day goal from the substitutes’ bench in the 2-2 draw against Liverpool, his performances have drawn some criticism from sections of the St James’ Park faithful.

Willock was one of Newcastle’s better performers in a largely underwhelming team showing against Championship opposition, and he was rewarded for getting in the right areas all night with the decisive goal.

His increased importance in a black and white shirt comes off the back of the Tyneside outfit rejecting a bid from Turkish club Besiktas for his services in the final days of the summer transfer window.

With one year remaining on his deal at St James’ Park, there may have been some surprise that Newcastle rejected the offer, worth £17m according to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, although Jaissle clearly sees him as a player who offers something.

Hope for Willock, But Murphy Needs to Go

If there was any surprise about the rejected bid for Willock, there would have been even more confusion that Newcastle rejected a £15m offer from Nottingham Forest for Murphy, allegedly at the request of Jaissle, who is claimed to ‘love’ him.

Speaking about his decision to keep the pair and name them in his 25-man Premier League squad, the German said:

They showed their quality, they still have potential to do even better…..and therefore, we made the decision that they are in the final squad.

Like Willock, the 31-year-old has less than 12 months remaining on his deal, but unlike the former Arsenal midfielder, his minutes have been limited under Jaissle this term.

Murphy has played a total of 34 minutes in the Premier League, with all of those coming from the substitutes’ bench in all three fixtures, with his main game time coming in the Carabao Cup, as Jaissle assesses his wide options.

The London-born winger had the perfect opportunity to show Jaissle that he was worthy of a starting spot in the Premier League against Leeds on Monday night with a strong performance at the New Den, but he failed to take it.

Murphy was given a 4/10 rating by the Northern Echo for his display on the right wing, as they criticised him for losing the ball on so many occasions on the night.

The forward actually started brightly, but his performance deteriorated as the night went on, with his crossing and shooting in particular poor.

Murphy needs to show more if he is to not only get more minutes in the Premier League, but also potentially earn a new deal at St James’ Park.

At the moment, Jaissle also has the likes of Anthony Elanga and Bazoumana Toure to pick from, and both should be given priority over Murphy.
