It has been a summer of upheaval for Newcastle United so far and things are only going to get worse as news emerged on Thursday morning that manager Eddie Howe would be leaving the club.
Howe was under pressure for vast swathes of the 2025/26 season, with Newcastle finishing 12th in the Premier League. And now the Englishman is departing St James’ Park.
Both the manager and the club initially agreed they would continue together this season, but Howe has decided it is time to move on and has informed Newcastle that he will step down.
Howe brings an end to five years with Newcastle
Howe was the Public Investment Fund’s choice to take over from Steve Bruce after taking control of the club in 2021. He has been with the club for nearly five seasons, guiding the Magpies to their first piece of silverware in 70 years when they won the Carabao Cup in 2025.
They also qualified for the UEFA Champions League twice under the 48-year-old.
Howe had to deal with a vast array of injuries during the 2025/26 campaign and has seen the club lose a number of star players this summer. Anthony Gordon made a big-money move to Barcelona, while Tottenham – who finished 17th last season – came in and signed Sandro Tonali for £100million.
There remain question marks over Bruno Guimaraes’ future too, with Arsenal preparing a £75million bid to sign him. It may be that the big changes that Howe was seeing at the club led to him making the decision to resign.

GIVEMESPORT senior football correspondents Ben Jacobs explained the situation, saying: “Howe told Newcastle’s hierarchy he wanted to leave several weeks ago but agreed to stay on until a replacement found.
“A decision not taken lightly and informed in part by high-profile exits at the club. Howe aware even before Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali left that there would be sales.”
New man has already been lined up by Newcastle
Newcastle have not wasted any time lining up a successor though, with the club keen to ensure there is not too much dead time with only three weeks until the new Premier League season starts.
Reports have suggested that Matthias Jaissle of Al Ahli, is set to be named as Howe’s replacement. Jaissle has been with Al Ahli since 2023, having left Red Bull Salzburg following two successful years in charge, winning back-to-back Austrian Bundesliga title and the Austrian Cup once.
