Newcastle are set to demand close to £100million for Bruno Guimaraes, despite Arsenal initially believing he could be bought for much less.

talkSPORT understands the Magpies captain has asked to leave St James’ Park to join the Gunners, who are expected to be preparing an offer in the region of £60m to secure his services.

Guimaraes has been a major target for the Premier League champions during this summer transfer window.

An offer of £55m for the midfielder was rebuffed in June, with Newcastle insisting at the time that they would not entertain bids for him.

The North East outfit also insisted there had been no club-to-club contact at that point, a position which they have maintained.

While talkSPORT later revealed that Guimaraes had agreed personal teams with Arsenal, Newcastle are maintaining their not for sale stance, as the north London club weigh up increasing their offer to £60m.

The Daily Telegraph have since reported that the Gunners were set to pull out of the deal for the Brazilian, who felt they had been misled on the player’s price.

Arsenal are said to have become interested in Guimaraes after they were told, via intermediaries, that he could be bought for £50m.

This is reportedly based on a conversation between the club and Newcastle’s former co-owner Amanda Staveley, who said they would listen to offers of that size if the club failed to qualify for the Champions League, rumours which were later denied.
