Pendlebury, who has long been admired not only for his leadership on the field but also for his quiet acts of generosity off it, revealed that the project is a deeply personal mission aimed at giving back to the community that supported his journey from a promising basketball player in Sale to an AFL icon.
The initiative, titled “HomeGround by Pendlebury”, will begin by transforming eight abandoned or underutilized properties in Melbourne’s inner suburbs into youth shelters offering 24/7 support services, mental health resources, and career pathway programs.
“I’ve had every opportunity in life because of support—family, coaches, mentors,” Pendlebury said at a press conference this morning. “No young person should ever have to sleep rough or feel like they don’t have a future. If I can help even a handful find their footing, it’s worth it.”
Pendlebury’s bold move comes at a time when youth homelessness in Australia is reaching alarming levels. According to Mission Australia, over 28,000 young people aged 12–24 are homeless on any given night. Factors like family breakdown, domestic violence, and the rising cost of living are forcing more youth onto the streets.
Local leaders have praised Pendlebury’s initiative as both timely and transformative. Melbourne Lord Mayor Sally Capp called it “a model of leadership beyond sport,” while youth advocates hope it will encourage other high-profile Australians to leverage their platform for social good.
The shelters, due to open in late 2025, will partner with not-for-profits including The Lighthouse Foundation and Frontyard Youth Services to ensure wraparound care. The facilities will offer short and medium-term housing, life skills workshops, and access to healthcare.
The AFL Players Association also expressed admiration for Pendlebury’s vision, stating that it “embodies the heart of our community values.”
At 37, with a playing career that’s already cemented his legacy, Pendlebury continues to set the bar—not just for what it means to be a champion athlete, but a true community leader.
